Continuation of Long-Term Medications Prior to Surgery

  • Take all medications including morning of surgery with sips of water EXCEPT diuretics and those listed below
  • Insulin and oral hypoglycemics, see diabetic guidelines.
  • Coumadin should be discontinued as per surgeon and/or PCP. An INR blood test should be ordered the day of surgery
  • Aspirin and NSAIDS
    • Discontinued as per surgeon
    • If aspirin is withheld it should be done one week prior to surgery
  • Plavix: Consider internal medicine consultation. See also cardiac stents.
  • Herbal pills: Discontinue one week prior to surgery
  • Diet pills: Discontinue two weeks prior to surgery
